Becky Beetle didn’t know her colors and she didn’t want to learn them. The only color she knew was brown, the color of her hard shell. Some of the other bugs had bright colors but she didn’t know what they were called.

The weather was getting colder outside and most of the bright flowers and leaves had disappeared as Thanksgiving drew nearer. Becky saw that the meadow where she lived was starting to look just as brown and boring as her shell.

December had come to Bug Meadow and the bugs scurried inside the warm greenhouse to keep out of the snow.

All of them had gathered to prepare for Christmas. Many of the bugs didn’t know what they could give as a gift. Others were more worried about what they would get.

Dragonfly especially wanted this to be a great Christmas for his mom and dad. “I want to give them a special gift, but I can’t think of anything,” he told his friend, Katydid.

Vendor Displays

I recently had the privilege of having a booth at the local IRA meeting. I wanted to post pictures here of my display so that it can give others ideas for their booths and also to help me remember how I set it up! I learned a lot in the process, had fun and hope to do more fairs and book sales.

Felts and the New Economy

The following is an essay my husband wrote about how he views our economy is changing and how felt stories will bring our children back to the basics. Turn off that television and video game, save on power, and watch your children's imaginations soar!

There is a new economy emerging. With so much retirement money disappearing, we will see, in the future, people who should be retiring, instead working into twilight years. This, plus the inevitable disappearance of middle management positions, will create intense competition for entry level jobs.

This may seem like a bleak outlook; it is bleak for those who lost life savings, but what it really means is a new opportunity for those who recognize the coming changes in the economic landscape. Where do felts fit in here? Just a minute and it will all come together.

In a depressed economy, people still need to eat and play. Education will not cease. But there will be a change in what people can and will afford. In economics, there are normal goods and inferior goods. Normal goods are products and services that people buy when income is good and they can afford what they want. Inferior goods are cheaper products and services that appeal to those who cannot afford the expensive option. The word inferior does not mean it is not good—quite the contrary. Inferior means specifically that it is a cheaper alternative than the "normal" choice.

As you can imagine, in the 1930s, lobster tails were probably not the most popular menu item in an average restaurant. Maybe macaroni and cheese. I like macaroni and cheese. I do not think of it as inferior. But in economic terms, the mac and cheese is the inferior good. And those who would sell the cheaper alternative would prosper.

Now do you see where felts come in? We do not sell a product that requires an expensive game console that must be upgraded each year. We are selling an inexpensive product that is educational, can be played with by boys and girls, moms and dads; older sister can pass it down to younger sister. They do not go out of style or run out of batteries. Remember, "inferior" does not mean poor quality, it simply refers to the more inexpensive product. I realize that the economy is changing. And our inexpensive alternative to expensive toys will be increasingly popular as the times change.

In times of change, those who are informed can position themselves ahead of the curve and prosper. We are already there.

Intro: Story Time Felts

Felt Board Stories.....don't you just love them? Ever since I was a little kid I loved to tell stories. I was Cinderella going to the ball, Snow White living with the 7 dwarfs, or even Gretel getting lost in the woods with her brother Hansel. Reliving classic fairy tales like these and even reinventing the outcomes was my passion. On the way to the ball, Cinderella would stop in and visit Snow White to get tips on how to sing or dance. Gretel would wander the woods and find Snow White's house and stop and visit for a while.

This is why I love Story Time Felts. The beautiful felt board stories foster creativity and imagination amongst children. They are colorful, engaging and best of all the pieces are washable!

The company is still working on it's website (doing a complete revamp) so while I wait for this to be finished, I wanted to have a place to share specials, stories and ideas.
